The first fact is that I need to lose weight before I can even begin my freestyle snowboard training. A lot of weight.
Learning to jump over kickers at the MK SNO!dome invariably means stacking it dozens of times before getting it right - and currently weighing 100kg (that's 220lbs to my American friends or a whopping 15st10 to my British mates) means that, in my current state, I would earn myself an instant ticket to the A&E room at Milton Keynes Hospital. So before I even dream of leaving the ground, I need to lose weight.
The second fact is that I need to seriously do something about my body fat percentage. As much as I hate to admit it - I'm officially a Lard Ass (notice the capital "L" and "A" which signify that I have crossed the line from "I noticed I need to lean up" to "other people have noticed that I need to lean-up"). Lard Ass status kicks-in somewhere around 15% bodyfat for men (and about 30% for women). Well, I've passed that horrible milestone already clocking in on Monday at 18%bf using my Biostat 1500 (bio-electrical impedence machine)! So while I won't be getting air over the indoor slope in MK anytime soon, I'm most certainly soaring high over my "normal" body fat percentage of 12% where I was just 4 months ago. By the end of August, I'm aiming to return to 12% so that I'm ready for the second phase of training.
Monday's run across the downs around MK's river (I don't know what the river's actually called) revealed another bone chilling fitness fact: my joints and internal organs are inflamed, stiff and sore. The impact of running even at a light pace made me feel like I was getting into a minor auto accident with every step. Imagine what a 9-hour-a-day snowboard marathon with jumps would make me feel like!
I blame this on non-compliance with my blood type diet. High levels of uric acid, lactic acid, lectin agglutination and a process called glysation have conspired to make me "feel my age" when I engage in high impact-high intensity exercises. As a result, I had to run slowly for 45 minutes. The Nelly and FLOrida on my MP3 sounded out of place with my pace. A slow Karen Carpenter or REM's "Everybody Hurts" would have been much more appropriate.
Sticking to my old diet will take some effort. I actually prefer to eat green leafy veg, fruit (barring orange and apples), carrots, sweet potatoes lean meat and seafood. The issue is that I'm the only person I associate with that feels comfortable staying on that diet. This is compounded by the fact that the standard UK diet is packed with sugar, high processed wheat products, milk and pork fat. I'll have to go back to what I advise my clients to: cook my own food and avoid eating on the go.
Today is weight training. Circuits. I will probably be working against my fitness again today, given that my wheat, dairy and pork based Anglo-Saxon diet has only today come to an abrupt halt. Let's see where the next 30 days takes us. I've got a lot of ground to cover and only 1 month to do it.
Wish me luck.
