First Day on the Slopes

Here I am in Chamonix on the first night of my annual pre-xmas trip. Besides being a little R&R after a gruelling year, it has proven my sports training hypothesis:

"Changing the way you do your cardio and weights workout just two months before your ski trip can make a HUGE difference in your ability to ski all day without being sore the next morning."

In fact, yesterday was quite a gruelling intro to the ski season. When I got to the top of Grand Montets (some 3km+ above sea level), the low clouds meant that there was no visibility at all for most of the descent. To complicate matters, high mountains tend to be much rockier - meaning that this early in the season the odd boulder head stubbornly juts out about 3" from the piste. Not the end of the world - and if this happened to me in late in the season, I probably wouldn't bat an eye. But such conditions mean that the first ride of the season will be filled with breaking, jumping and tail turning - normally quite hard on the thighs and bum.

After 5 hours of those conditions, so early in the season I would usually be feeling it in the morning. Actually though, I feel great and can't wait to get back out there!

If you're heading out later this season, a few weeks of balance and overload training will do you well. Its a small sacrifice that will pay dividends when you're not walking like a duck on the second morning of your holiday!
